Monsanto Salutes American Heart Association “Face the Fats” Campaign

ST. LOUIS, April 18, 2007 – Monsanto today expressed support for the America Heart Association (AHA) “Face the Fats” campaign, which is designed to increase consumer understanding about fats and how to eat sensibly. The educational campaign is designed to teach Americans how to minimize trans fat in their diet and eat less foods loaded with saturated fat.

Kurt Wickstrom, U.S. soybean traits marketing manager for Monsanto, said the AHA national education campaign underscores the opportunity for U.S. soybean growers to meet the growing consumer demand for healthier foods by growing Vistive™ low-linolenic soybeans.

Vistive soybeans from Monsanto can reduce or eliminate unhealthy trans fats in processed soybean oil. “Vistive low-lin soybeans not only offer American soybean growers strong agronomic performance and a premium market opportunity, but they also can help the U.S. soybean industry maintain its 70 percent share of the domestic food oil market,” said Wickstrom.
Wickstrom said that major food companies, including KFC and Kellogg’s, are switching to Vistive oil to eliminate trans fats in their products. To meet the growing demand, Vistive is expected to be planted on about 1.5 million acres this season, about triple last year’s acreage. In addition, the premium offered to growers who plant Vistive has increased to an average 55 cents to 65 cents per bushel for the 2007 season.

Offered in 28 seed brands, Vistive will be available this season throughout Iowa and in parts of Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Michigan, Ohio, Delaware, Virginia, Maryland, Missouri and Kentucky.

Growers interested in planting Vistive low-lin soybeans can contact their Monsanto sales representative or seed dealer, or log onto to www.vistive.com. To view the AHA “Face the Fats” campaign, visit www.americanheart.org.
