NEW CROP INSURANCE POLICY PROTECTS PRODUCERS GROWING CORN FOR ETHANOL

Industry’s first Ethanol Policy is now available through John Deere Risk Protection

Johnston, Iowa — Jan. 25, 2008 — John Deere Risk Protection (JDRP) is now offering the industry’s first-ever Ethanol Policy by providing coverage to corn producers, who have delivery contracts for the purpose of ethanol production. This new policy, available once the multi-peril crop insurance policy is with JDRP, insures yield shortfalls below contracted volumes in the event the price to replace the corn rises above the federal crop insurance coverage. more

Hybrids with the Agrisure® RW Trait Deliver High Yield in Debut Year

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. – January 23, 2008 — Almost a quarter of all U.S. corn was planted with a biotech trait for rootworm control in 2007—more than double the previous year. By all accounts, the newest trait for rootworm control – the Agrisure® RW trait from Syngenta — exceeded grower expectations in a year that brought the second-highest yields on record.
“Grower feedback on Agrisure RW hybrids has been overwhelmingly positive,” according to Von Kaster, entomologist with Syngenta Seeds. “It’s a significant achievement when you consider that the major corn-producing states in 2007 faced pockets of summer drought, late-season wind and rain storms, and even some flooding.” more

ISU Data Sheds New Light on How Corn Trait Integration May Boost Yield

Rootworm trait evaluations also fail to correlate root ratings to yield

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. – January 14, 2008 — Newly released data from 2007 Iowa State University (ISU) corn rootworm trials1 have focused attention on how certain trait technologies don’t always have a positive impact on yield. The data also showed there is not a clear correlation between root ratings and yield2. These results challenge the common assumption that adding traits to germplasm always increases yield. In fact, the study raises questions about yield drag in some stacked trait combinations. more
